What Skills Should Sex Education Develop?

If sex education is effective, it must include opportunities for young people to develop skills, because it can be difficult to get to work on the basis of simple information.

The young people develop skills as part of sex education in the context of general life skills. The ability to communicate, to listen, to negotiate with others, ask questions and identify sources of help and advice are useful life skills that can be applied to sexual relations. Sex education for young people to develop effective negotiation skills, decision making, and listening to the statement. Other important skills are able to detect the pressure of other people and to resist, and treatment of challenging prejudices, and that we can seek help from adults - including parents, carers and professionals - through family, community and health services and welfare.

Sex education that works also helps to equip young people with skills to be able to distinguish between correct and incorrect information and to discuss a wide range of moral and social issues and perspectives on gender and sexuality, including including different cultural attitudes and sensitive issues like sexuality, abortion and contraception.
