Some people believe homosexuality is a disease and we believe it can and should be cured. Many of these "cures" centered around psychological therapies (often called reparative therapy for), which seeks to convert a gay sexual orientation to heterosexual. Although there is little scientific data to assess what is available suggests that replacement therapy is designed ineffective. The American Psychological Association (APA), the largest association of psychologists in the world said:
“Homosexuality is not a mental disorder and the APA opposes all portrayals of lesbian, gay and bisexual people as mentally ill and in need of treatment due to their sexual orientation.”
Some very religious groups believe that homosexuality is a sin and is a direct violation of the Bible and other religious texts. As with the restoration therapy, there was little or no scientific evaluation of healing and prayer techniques used. What is the available evidence suggests that the success of these techniques is limited to three areas:
Convincing bisexuals to restrict sexual activity of members of the opposite sex.
Convince homosexuals to be celibate.
Convincing gay men and lesbians trying to maintain heterosexual relationships while maintaining a homosexual orientation.
Conveniently, the two founders of a ministry created to "cure" homosexuals later described their program as "ineffective ... Not one person was healed. "
The theme of "cure" homosexuality has become politically charged debate in the United States with Christian political organizations supporting the theory that homosexuality can be changed by force of will for peace. They claim that "thousands of people leave their homosexual identity of celibacy, and even marriage."
Alternatively, a gay and lesbian supporters argue that these views are wrong, what it means to be gay, and the amount of discrimination against gay and lesbian people. In addition, the American Psychological Association has made a systematic review, which not only states that psychological measures are not sufficient to change sexual orientation, but can also cause significant damage.
